Conferences/Workshops/Public Discussions

The Columbia Climate School is pleased to announce this call for sessions and paper abstracts for the MR2025 conference, which will be held from June 16-18 at Columbia University in New York City. This year’s name change to MR, for Mobility and Resilience, reflects the ways that “managed retreat” as a term is contested and specific to particular geographic contexts, as well as the wide breadth of topics beyond retreat that the conference addresses.

MR2025 will be held in partnership with the Global Centre for Climate Mobility around the theme of “Mobility, Adaptation, and Wellbeing in a Changing Climate.” We are inviting session proposals for traditional academic paper sessions, roundtable panels, and workshops, as well as poster presentation abstracts and individual papers. For questions or further information, contact Sheehan Moore at [email protected].

Please refer to the conference themes as you develop your submissions. See the conference website for more information, https://adaptation.climate.columbia.edu/

Deadline: Friday, January 20, 2025, by 5pm Eastern time.

The complex connections between Aging-Climate-Health in rural America requires new and innovative research attention. This workshop brings together researchers in these topical areas with the objectives of reviewing current research, identifying knowledge gaps, and building grant-oriented collaborations.

The 1-day mini-conference/workshop will include research presentations and a discussion of data resources and gaps, led by the Center for Aging, Climate, and Health. Time will also be offered for a brainstorming within topically focused breakout groups aimed to build collaborations, discuss broad research agendas, explore dissemination, and/or work toward high-impact scientific publications and proposals. There will also be a half-day remote, follow-up meeting several weeks after the conference to reconnect, discuss ideas, and share opportunities.

Brief applications are required to ensure adequate space and to identify key thematic areas for working groups.

Some funds are available to support travel expenses that are in addition to PAA travel. In your application, please include your CV and 1-page on your interest in the mini-conference including its relation to your research agenda or interests. If interested in presenting your research, please also include an extended abstract (no more than 1 page). Also please note if funding is required. Participants and presenters will be selected based on research alignment with the conference objectives and the quality of abstract. Attention will also be paid to achieving diversity of representation by discipline, geography, career stage, and socio-demographics.

Submit materials by January 10, 2025, to [email protected].  Decisions will be made by January 24.

The Editorial Team is excited to invite chapter contributions for an upcoming Springer Nature book publication titled: Climate Change, Extreme Climate Events, Loss, and Damage in Africa. This book seeks to provide empirical insights and practical solutions to how extreme climate events are shaping the African landscape and communities.

Africa is facing severe climate change impacts, including droughts, floods, and heat waves, which threaten food systems, livelihoods, ecosystems, and socio-economic stability. These impacts are exacerbated by poverty and social inequalities. Thus, this book aims to highlight empirical evidence on how the African continent has been confronting extreme climate events, with a focus on understanding and mitigating climate-induced Losses and Damages in Africa. The book discusses the economic and non-economic losses and damages from extreme climate events.

Accepted chapters will be published in a globally distributed and indexed Springer Nature book. Each corresponding author will receive a complimentary e-copy, and the book will be indexed in Scopus and other major research databases.

Important Dates: Submission period opens November 1, 2024 and closes March 31, 2025. A rigorous double-blind peer review will follow, concluding by May 31, 2025. The book is scheduled for release by July 30, 2025.

The Young Scientist Summer Program (YSSP) at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), is currently accepting applications to its 2025 program (closing date is 13 January 2025, midnight CET).

The program, which takes place from 2 June to 29 August, is designed for PhD students (ideally about 2 years prior to receiving their PhD) working on a topic compatible with ongoing research at IIASA and a wish to explore the policy implications of their work. Participants will be working under the direct mentorship of an experienced IIASA scientist in a unique interdisciplinary and international research environment. They will produce a paper (serving as first step towards a publishable journal article) and will get the opportunity to build up contacts for future collaboration within the institute's worldwide network.

As YSSP representatives of IIASA’s Population and Just Societies (POPJUS) Program, the organizers particularly welcome applications of candidates interested in human-centered and population-based approaches to understanding drivers of population change, sustainable development, and wellbeing; as well as research focusing on justice considerations in climate, biodiversity, disaster risk, and/or loss-and-damages.

For more information, contact: Guillaume Marois ([email protected]) and Elliott Woodhouse ([email protected]).

Deadline for applications: January 8, 2025 (11:59 pm CET).

The Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR) is inviting applications from qualified and highly-motivated students for a Summer Research Visit.

The goal of the Population and Social Data Science Summer Incubator Program is to enable discovery by bringing together data scientists and population scientists to work on focused, intensive and collaborative projects of broad societal relevance.

For a period of 3 months (June 2nd – August 22nd, 2025) participating students will work in small teams, with support from experienced mentors, towards a common research goal. For the summer of 2025, the focus of the program will be on three main research areas:

  • “Climate Change and Mobility” mentored by Risto Conte Keivabu, Ebru Sanlitürk, and Monica Alexander (University of Toronto);
  • “Machine Learning for Life Course Trajectories” mentored by Linda Vecgaile, Bruno Arpino (University of Padova) and Emilio Zagheni;
  • “Mortality in War Settings” mentored by Yvette Young, Diego Alburez-Gutierrez, Enrique Acosta (Centre d'Estudis Demogràfics -CED) and Irena Chen.

Participating students will be exposed to best practices across the social sciences and data sciences while contributing to a hands-on project experience that will result in a scientific journal article. All participants will also have access to lectures and will be able to participate in other scientific activities taking place at the MPIDR.

Applicants must be enrolled in a doctoral, master’s or undergraduate university program (at the time they visit the MPIDR). Selected candidates must obtain approval to participate in the program by their supervisor / administrator.
