The paper examines the environmental history of Madagascar, focusing on the evolution of human settlement and forest cover in a region in the south-central highlands, and it is grounded in the specifics of one landscape -- the Pays Zafimaniry -- whose settlement in the past two centuries has been posited as an exemplar for the prior transformation of the rest of the highlands.

La méthode, largement interdisciplinaire, s'appuie sur une analyse croisée de plusieurs sources de données collectées sur le terrain et synthétisées : enquêtes quantitatives, entretiens thématiques, cartes et SIG, modélisation.

For more than a decade, development practitioners and communities in Fianarantsoa province, Madagascar, have been involved in community-based projects that link family planning, health, and environment efforts. Since the early 1990s, a range of approaches that combine family planning and/or health interventions with environment and rural development activities have been implemented throughout Fianarantsoa province, making it one of the richest centers of such programming in Madagascar and the world.
The central hypothesis of the ECHO/IP activity is that by integrating health, family planning and natural resource conservation activities in community-based projects, communities will be able to take advantage of synergies that make these interventions more effective and more sustainable than if they were pursued in a vertical, sector specific fashion.
Through alternative sources of information the author questions the deforestation narrative of Madagascar and gives alternative explanations for today's land cover.

Author's abstract. Since 1993, the University of Michigan Population-Environment Fellows Programs (PEFP) has linked the population and environment sectors of development both at the field level and in policy analysis. The PEFP and Denise Caudill of World Neighbors launched the Impact Assessment Project to develop a framework for assessing an integrated program. This article addresses project findings, including the successes, constraints, and obstacles of integrated/linked programs, as well as provides field examples from Ecuador and Madagascar.
